DISABILITY SUPPORT

Online Volunteer Opportunities

BIG BARRIER 1: DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY (Videos without captions or documents that screen readers can't process aren’t always accessible to people with disabilities.)

Be My Eyes: Assist blind or low-vision individuals through a live video call to help with everyday tasks like reading a label or navigating a webpage.

Bookshare: Scan, proofread, or format ebooks so they are accessible for people with reading barriers.

Europeana Transcribe: Transcribe historical letters, photographs, and diaries written by or about people with disabilities to make them searchable and readable for everyone.

BIG BARRIER 2: REMOTE OPPORTUNITY & EVENT ACCESSIBILITY (Digital spaces bypass physical barriers for people with disabilities and provide equal access to education & employment without the daily stress of navigating inaccessible spaces.)

Create Virtual Opportunities: Virtual events allow people with disabilities to feel included while accessing support features like screen reader compatibility, adjustable text sizes, sign language interpretation, and real-time captioning. They also break down physical and geographical barriers, eliminate the stress of travel, and provides safe, inclusive spaces for social connection.

Monitor Events: Volunteer to monitor chat boxes, drop in links to resources during webinars, or manage tech troubleshooting for attendees during online Disability Pride events.

BIG BARRIER 3: ADVOCACY (People with disabilities need advocacy to overcome systemic barriers, navigate complex legal and healthcare systems, and fight discrimination.)

Amplify the Voices of People with Disabilities: Share the stories of people with disabilities, and your experiences supporting them.

Redirect Opportunities: If you are asked to speak on a panel or represent a group, ask if you can instead recommend a person with a disabilitiy to share their lived experience.

Social Media Campaigns: Share photos, and create art.

Ask Before Assuming: Never assume someone needs help. Always ask, "Would you like any assistance?" and respect their answer if they decline.

Champion Accessibility: Advocate for physical, digital, and sensory accessibility in your community & connect with disability support organizations.
